Accountability Sought Following Death of Five-Year-Old Girl in UP Government Hospital

In a heartbreaking case of alleged medical negligence at a government medical college in Budaun, Uttar Pradesh, two contractual doctors have been terminated and two others suspended. The five-year-old girl, who died from a fever, was reportedly left untreated while medical staff were occupied with a cricket match.

The girl's family accused the doctors and health staff of prioritizing leisure over patient care, prompting the medical college management to form a three-member committee to investigate the incident. The committee submitted its report on Thursday evening, confirming that some doctors were indeed absent from their duties during the crucial time.

As a result of the findings, the Head of the ENT Department was dismissed immediately for gross negligence, along with a Junior Resident from the same department. Both had been working under contract. Additionally, Dr. Abhishek Sharma from the ENT Department and Dr. Imran from Pediatrics have been suspended for one month each.

Dr. Kumar, the Principal of the medical college, clarified that while the suspended and terminated doctors did not actively participate in the cricket match, they were found to be watching it during their duty hours. This conduct has been categorized as gross negligence.

The incident began when Nazim, a resident of Thalia Nagla, brought his daughter Sofia to the medical college after she complained of a fever. According to the Principal, Nazim alleged that no pediatrician was present, and health workers directed him to various rooms without finding any available doctors or staff. Tragically, the girl died during this time. The college administration is now under pressure to ensure that such negligence does not occur again.
